Angela Hewitt occupies a unique position among the leading pianists of our time. In addition to her wide-ranging repertoire and regular appearances in recital and with renowned orchestras throughout Europe, America and Asia, her award-winning recordings and performances of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach have established her as one of the world's leading Bach interpreters. In 2020, she received the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig, a great honor as it was awarded to a woman for the first time in its 17-year history.
Born into a musical family, Angela Hewitt began her piano studies at the age of three, performing in public at the age of four and winning her first scholarship a year later. She studied with Jean-Paul Sévilla at the University of Ottawa and won the Toronto International Bach Piano Competition in 1985, which launched her successful career as a pianist. In 2018, she received the Governor General's Lifetime Achievement Award, having already received her home country's highest honor in 2015: she became a Companion of the Order of Canada, an honor bestowed on only 165 living Canadians at any one time. In 2006, she was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II. Angela Hewitt is a member of the Royal Society of Canada, holds seven honorary doctorates and is a Visiting Fellow of Peterhouse College in Cambridge.
