Dachau is quickly and easily reachable from Munich – whether by car or public transport.
To ensure a relaxed start to your visit, here are the most important tips for getting to and parking in Dachau's Old Town.

Parking in Dachau's Old Town

The old town of Dachau is characterized by narrow streets and limited parking space. 

Here’s what you should know:

  • Parking in Dachau's Old Town is free. (Exception: Parking garage on Wieninger Straße)
  • Parking in the old town is restricted on weekdays between 9 AM and 6 PM, and on Saturdays between 8 AM and 12 PM. 90 minutes limited. Please make sure to place your parking disc visibly in your vehicle. If you do not have a parking disc, the Tourist Information at Karlsberg 1a will be happy to help you.

Our Recommendation:
Use Parking walk around the Dachau old town and walk the last few minutes via the Martin-Huber-Stairs or Karlsberg or take the Bus 719 to the Old Town.

Arrival by public transportation / Deutsche Bahn:

You can easily reach Dachau station from Munich Central Station without changing trains. The S-Bahn line S2 travels directly from the main station to Dachau and only needs around 20 minutes.
Alternatively DB Regional trains on the track Munich - Ingolstadt - Treuchtlingen - Nuremberg or Würzburg, in Dachau and thus also offer a fast and convenient connection to Dachau.

Travel by car

Dachau has access to the highways Munich-Stuttgart (A8, exit Dachau-Fürstenfeldbruck), Munich-Nuremberg (A9, to/from highway junction Neufahrn via A92, exit Oberschleißheim/Dachau) as well as to the highway ring Munich (A99, exit München- Ludwigsfeld).

Munich Airport

Munich Airport can be reached from Dachau in approx. 30 minutes by car.

The airport is also well connected to Dachau by S-Bahn. The transfer stop between line S2 Dachau and the airport S-Bahn lines S1 or S8 is Laim.

 

Connection from Munich Airport

A92 towards Munich, exit Oberschleißheim; S-Bahn lines S1 or S8 to Laim, change there to the S2 out of town towards Dachau, Petershausen or Altomünster to Dachau Bahnhof. Alternatives are the airports of Augsburg (distance approx. 50 km) and Memmingen (distance approx. 110 km).

Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling to Dachau

There is limited parking in the old town. It is recommended to use parking lot P3 Ludwig-Thoma-Wiese or 

Free parking is available in the old town and in the immediate vicinity, for example, at the Ludwig-Thoma-Wiese. Please note the 90-minute time limit in the old town area.

From Dachau train station, you can reach the old town by bus 719 or on foot.

Yes, Dachau is directly connected to Munich’s S-Bahn network and can be reached in about 20 minutes on the S2. From Munich Central Station, the RB16 also runs to Dachau in about 12 minutes.
