It's not just during the folk festival in mid-August that it becomes clear: Dachau is also a very traditional Upper Bavarian small town. The people of Dachau love and proudly maintain their customs. This is particularly evident in the special Dachau traditional costume, which has some unique features.
The Dachau traditional costume is eye-catching – especially the women's costume with its heavy bodice skirt (so-called „Boinkittl“), intricate embroidery, and ribbon headdress.
The men's attire, with black leather breeches, a velvet waistcoat, a Janker, and the typical folded boots, is also unmistakable and well-known far beyond the region.
The Dachau costume is also regularly visible at the Munich Oktoberfest parade. Alternatively, you can visit the Dachau District Museum, which dedicates its own department to the costume.
Dachau is paying special tribute to its traditional costume with traffic light stencils installed in 2025.
