The Spatzenschlössl, built in 1899, was the residence of the painter, draughtsman and illustrator Hermann Stockmann (1867-1938), who came to Dachau in 1898 and had this house built in the neo-baroque style. As a friend of sparrows, he always offered the birds food and shelter on his property, which is why he gave the villa the name Spatzenschlössl. Stockmann co-founded the Dachau Museum Association in 1903 alongside August Pfaltz (1859-1917) and Hans von Hayek (1869-1940) and was largely responsible for setting up the district museum in the rooms of Dachau Castle in 1905.
