Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial

The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial is the central European place of learning and remembrance, visited annually by more than 900,000 people from all over the world who are interested in contemporary history.

A few weeks after Adolf Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor, a concentration camp for political prisoners was set up in Dachau on March 22, 1933.

It served as a model for later concentration camps and as a „school of violence” for the SS men under whose rule it stood. During the twelve years of its existence, over 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned here and in numerous satellite camps. 41,500 were murdered. American troops liberated the survivors in Dachau concentration camp on April 29, 1945.

The memorial site of the former concentration camp was built in 1965 on the initiative and according to the plans of the surviving prisoners, who joined together in the Comité International de Dachau, with the support of the Bavarian state. From 1996 to 2003, a new exhibition on the history of the Dachau concentration camp was created with the leitmotif „The path of the prisoners”.

Regular events deepen the knowledge and keep the memory of what happened alive.
