Dachau as a place of learning and remembrance

Learning and remembering

Dachau is known worldwide as the site of one of the first concentration camps, built in 1933. Over 204,000 prisoners were registered, and at least 41,500 people died there of hunger, disease, torture, murder and the consequences of imprisonment in a concentration camp. Today, the city's top priority is to keep the memory of what happened alive. The concentration camp memorial with its museum and archive makes a significant contribution to this, as do discussions with contemporary witnesses, the International Youth Meeting, an annual contemporary history symposium and much more.
