Dachau Town Hall, the seat of the town council, is located in the heart of the old town. First mentioned in 1486, the town hall was rebuilt in 1614/15. Three hundred years later, the building was so dilapidated that it was demolished and replaced by a new building in 1934. The rapid growth of the town after the Second World War made it necessary to build a larger town hall. In 1976, a modern intermediate building connected the "Old Town Hall" with the façade of the former "Lebzelterhaus", which had been owned by wax pullers and gingerbread makers since the 16th century. The new building was designed by Prof. Dr. Werner Fauser and the stonework was created in the workshop of sculptor Reinhold Grübl. The building was awarded a prize by the Association of German Architects. Two memorial plaques commemorating Dachau's Jewish victims of the Holocaust are located in the passageway to the viewing terraces behind the town hall (unique panoramic view!). There are also works by Dachau sculptors.
