Art needs air! The artist group SCHOLLE between lake and moor

Out of the studio, into the light: The artist group „Die Scholle“

At the beginning of the 20th century, the members of the „Die Scholle“ artist group turned against the academic narrowness and sought places where their art could breathe. In Dachau, the surrounding moor, and in Holzhausen on Lake Ammersee, artists such as Leo Putz, Max Feldbauer, and Fritz Erler found new motifs. With their fresh colors and freer compositions, they significantly shaped Bavarian Modernism.

Beyond the heyday of the „Scholle,“ the new exhibition also focuses on the individual paths of its members after the group's dissolution. This creates a multifaceted picture of a generation of artists whose works not only demonstrate the diversity of styles, but also reflect the tensions and upheavals of the first half of the 20th century.
